The Impact of Google’s AI Overview Rollout on Search Behavior
A recent study conducted by search industry expert Rand Fishkin has shed light on the effects of Google’s AI overview rollout in May. This study analyzed millions of Google searches in the United States and European Union, revealing some intriguing insights into how AI integration can impact search behavior.
AI Overviews Rollout & Reversal
In May 2024, Google introduced AI overviews in the United States, generating summaries for various search queries. However, the feature received mixed reviews and was eventually scaled back by the end of the month. Google acknowledged the shortcomings of the AI overviews in a blog post, leading to several technical improvements in their systems.
Subsequent studies indicated a decrease in the frequency of AI summaries being shown, but those that did appear were more comprehensive and linked to fewer sources.
Decline In Mobile Searches
Fishkin’s analysis revealed a noticeable decrease in mobile searches following the introduction of AI overviews. While desktop searches saw a slight uptick, mobile searches, which account for a significant portion of Google queries, experienced a significant drop. This decline suggests that users may have been less motivated to search on mobile devices when presented with AI-generated summaries.
Impact On Overall Search Behavior
Despite the decline in mobile searches, overall search behavior remained relatively stable during the AI overview rollout. Clicks per search on mobile devices saw a minor increase, while desktop clicks per search remained consistent. This indicates that users who engaged with AI overviews still clicked on search results at a similar or slightly higher rate than before.
Implications For Google & the Search Industry
The study highlights the challenges Google faces in integrating AI-generated content into search results. Additionally, it uncovered concerning trends in Google search behavior, including low click-through rates, dominance of zero-click searches, and a significant portion of self-referral traffic to Google-owned properties.
Why SEJs Cares
This study emphasizes the importance of adapting SEO strategies to accommodate changing search behavior, such as optimizing for zero-click searches and diversifying traffic sources. It also raises questions about the future of AI in search and the potential outcomes of its implementation.
