Eric Bandholz: Introduce yourself to our audience.
Corey Wilks: As a licensed clinical psychologist with a focus on cognitive behavior therapy, I empower individuals to conquer negative thinking patterns. My current role involves coaching entrepreneurs and creators to align their values with their business goals while breaking free from limiting beliefs.
I am a prolific writer, contributing articles to various platforms including Psychology Today. Additionally, I have been a guest on several popular podcasts.
My journey took a significant leap when I caught the attention of Ali Abdaal, a renowned productivity expert and YouTuber. After crafting an article addressing his struggles in life and business, we collaborated for six months, leading to numerous positive outcomes.
My approach involves offering valuable resources to those in need, regardless of whether they choose to work with me. Educating and supporting others is at the core of my coaching philosophy.
Bandholz: Can you share insights on your coaching methodology?
Wilks: Drawing from my background in psychology, my coaching revolves around enhancing mindset and implementing effective strategies. Common challenges faced by entrepreneurs include self-limiting beliefs and personal narratives that hinder progress.
Many individuals possess the knowledge and skills to achieve their goals but struggle with self-doubt and perfectionism. They often cite external factors as obstacles when, in reality, accessing information and resources is easier than ever.
My role is to help clients overcome these mental blocks, clarify their priorities, and bridge the gap between their aspirations and actions.
Bandholz: How do you advise people whose expectations surpass their capabilities?
Wilks: Intelligence can sometimes become a liability as it leads to overthinking. Success in entrepreneurship lies in identifying problems and devising solutions. While intelligence aids in problem-solving, excessive analysis can lead to paralysis.
I have witnessed individuals with average intelligence outperforming highly intelligent individuals due to their ability to take action without overthinking.
Bandholz: What prompted your departure from the field of psychology?
Wilks: My transition from a behavioral health provider in addiction treatment to a remote telehealth position saw an unexpected end due to licensing constraints. Faced with uncertainty, I pivoted to executive coaching, leveraging my expertise in psychology to empower healthy individuals to thrive.
The uncharted territory of coaching opened doors to personal growth and self-improvement, enabling me to share my knowledge through valuable content and mentorship.
